Beware! Why we don’t use sweeteners that accelerate brain aging
Artificial sweeteners have long been considered a “healthy alternative” to sugar – no calories, no worries. But the latest scientific findings present a much more concerning picture. A new large-scale study, published in the prestigious journal Neurology, revealed a clear link between six artificial sweeteners and faster brain aging.
Researchers followed nearly 13,000 adults for more than eight years and found: those who frequently consumed drinks and products with artificial sweeteners had a significantly faster decline in memory and cognitive abilities. In numbers, this means up to 1.6 years of additional brain aging compared to those who consumed little to none of these sweeteners.
Which sweeteners are the most risky?
Among the “accused” were sweeteners found in many diet products, drinks, and desserts:
aspartame
saccharin
xylitol
erythritol
sorbitol
acesulfame K
The study showed that there was no essential difference between them, as almost all were linked to accelerated cognitive decline. The exception was tagatose, which showed no such connection.
Why are the brain cells in danger?
Experts warn that artificial sweeteners affect the gut microbiota, which is closely connected to brain function. Changes in the gut can trigger inflammation and alter the functioning of microglia – the immune cells in the brain. When these shift into a “damaging mode,” the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease increases even further.
In addition, researchers found that the connection was especially pronounced in people with diabetes, who often consume more artificial sweeteners. For them, the risk of faster cognitive decline was even greater.
Why Frutilu does not use dangerous sweeteners
When developing Frutilu drinks, we wanted to avoid these findings, which is why we do not use sweeteners that accelerate brain aging. Our philosophy is clear: a drink must be refreshing, tasty, and safe for long-term consumption.
Frutilu is based on natural stevia and sucralose – sweeteners developed with the modern lifestyle in mind and a better choice for everyday use. Sucralose is barely metabolized by the body, so it does not burden metabolism, while stevia is plant-based and naturally sweet.
The message is clear: artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, saccharin, and erythritol are not as harmless as they seem. Their frequent use can, in the long run, harm your memory, concentration, and overall brain function.
Choose wisely, choose Frutilu.
