23Why rehydration matters in autumn too
When temperatures drop, we often automatically assume that we need to drink less. In summer, the heat and our thirst naturally remind us to keep drinking, while in autumn the feeling of thirst can be much less noticeable. But that certainly doesn’t mean your body stops losing water.
In fact, you can still lose a significant amount of fluid during physical activity in the colder months – it’s simply less obvious.
1. We still sweat in autumn
When we run, hike, cycle or work out, our body produces heat and regulates it partly through sweating. That still happens when it’s cooler outside.
The difference is that we often notice sweat less in autumn. Cold air cools it more quickly, our clothes absorb it, and we simply don’t feel like we’re sweating as much as we would in summer.
Research shows that sweat loss in cold conditions may be lower than in warm conditions, but fluid loss still occurs.
2. We feel less thirsty in cooler weather
This is one of the more interesting reasons. During exercise in the cold, our sense of thirst can be slightly reduced, which often means we drink less. In one study, participants drank less water while exercising in cold conditions than in warm conditions, even though they were still losing body fluids.
In other words: feeling less thirsty doesn’t necessarily mean your body needs less fluid.
3. We also lose fluid through breathing
Autumn air is often cooler and drier. When we’re active, we breathe faster and more deeply, which means we also lose some water through respiration.
During exercise in the colder months, both breathing and a slightly increased urine output can contribute to overall fluid loss. So on a longer autumn hike or during a workout, you may still be losing fluid even if you don’t feel particularly hot.
4. We lose electrolytes along with sweat
Sweat doesn’t just contain water – we also lose electrolytes, particularly sodium.
For shorter, less intense activities, water and a normal meal are usually enough. During longer or more demanding activity, however, a drink containing electrolytes can help replace lost fluids and minerals. Sports guidelines generally suggest that these drinks are most useful during longer, more intense exercise or when sweat losses are higher.
5. Rehydration matters after exercise too
Your need for fluids doesn’t stop the moment your workout or hike ends. If you’ve lost a significant amount of fluid during activity, it makes sense to replace it afterwards as well. Research suggests that sodium in a drink can help the body retain the fluid you consume and restore fluid balance more effectively.
That makes rehydration particularly relevant after a longer hike, run, bike ride, intense workout or several hours of outdoor activity.
Water or an electrolyte drink?
On a normal day or after a short, easy workout, plain water is perfectly sufficient for most people. For extra flavour, you can add sugar-free Frutilu instant drinks.
An electrolyte drink can make sense when:
- the activity lasts longer,
- you sweat heavily,
- the workout is intense,
- you have several activities in the same day,
- or you need to replace lost fluids more quickly after exercise.
For shorter activities in cooler conditions, drinking according to your thirst and usual routine is often enough. A more structured hydration plan becomes more useful during longer and more demanding exercise.

Autumn is no reason to forget about hydration
In summer, the heat and thirst naturally encourage us to drink. In autumn, staying hydrated often takes a little more conscious effort. After all, your body doesn’t look at the calendar and think: “It’s September, I don’t need water anymore.”
If you stay active throughout autumn, always take something to drink with you, drink regularly and, after more demanding activity, remember to replace lost electrolytes too. Because good hydration has no season! 💧🍂
So, when your autumn plans get a little more active, Frutilu SPORT contains electrolytes and is a practical way to prepare a tasty rehydration drink after your activity.
